Watch ‘Eviction? Dog’s Blood!! Nick Zynchuk & Montreal’s Red Plateau 1933,’ the newest solo, one act play written and performed by local playwright/actor/producer and musician Norman Nawrocki, on YouTube or Facebook
The 50 minute long play was supposed to be performed live at the 2020 MIATF. It’s based on a true story that made Montreal headlines in 1933. In this gripping production, Nawrocki portrays Nick Zynchuk, an unemployed, Polish-Ukrainian worker murdered by the police during a brutal eviction in The Plateau. Some 2,000 people were trying to block the eviction. For his funeral procession – the largest Montreal had ever seen – 30,000 marched peacefully in the streets. They were also attacked by the police.
“EVICTION takes a harrowing tale of class struggle, racism, and police oppression and turns it into a thoroughly engaging and almost optimistic story of an ordinary, hardworking man just trying to make good in a new home. . . And aside from being a solid character actor, projecting defiant heart as the stalwart hero of the piece, Norman proves with some gorgeous violin work that he’s a capable musician to boot.â€
